Vol. 2, No. 4, Winter 2005 :: IMMANENCE
Writing on the existential problem of immanence, whether there is essence, something inherent and intractable, something guaranteed or inborn. The question is a question of 'ifs', of whether or not what is carried within a word, an idea, a mind or a body, is somehow a factor of universal integrity, or whether it is an accident of circumstance...

Vol. 2, No. 3, Fall 2004 :: TRACES
Writing on the art of fine lines that retain the residue of lived experience, the sound and scent of a place, the ribbons of meaning that trail out into the past, which we invent, as an active part of our present and future...

Vol. 2, No. 2, Summer 2004 :: THIRST & BRINE
Poetry on the subject of appetite and longing, the balance of what exists and what is desired, an hommage to the poet Pablo Neruda, featured poets of Chile and analysis of the work of Jorge Teillier, poet of limits and the hearth...

Vol. 2, No. 1, Spring 2004 :: THRESHOLDS
Where is the edge of what is known, of what can be asserted plainly, of what we believe ourselves to be? In this edition, we examine the problem of crossing from one side of a reality to another, overcoming, outgrowing, forgetting, gaining texture...

Vol. 1, No. 4, Summer 2003 :: CONFLICT
Original works of poetry and theory, related to tensions between ideas, people, and competing strategies for sorting out such conflict, on the media, on a doctrinaire approach to being in the world, on 'heaven and earth' ('himmel och jord'), on the possibility of crafting something 'new', as if without roots, and the problem of knowing the natural environment, in order to live as part of it...

Vol. 1, No. 3, Spring 2003 :: MELODY
An effort to explore the hidden musicality of a world of competing perspectives, facing up to change. A glimpse of the personal in its confrontation with time, tempo. The sharp sheen of loss. The great poetic portraiture of Avedon. Sustainable development as an integration into the rhythms, the instrumentation of the natural world...

Vol. 1, No. 2, Winter 2002 :: MEDICINE
Within a world uneasy with itself, the poetry of self-discovery, of expressive meditation... "the medicine of acquiring knowledge" as the essence of the craft of making literary language... the sea's embrace, the persistence of hope... a celebration of the personal, flicker of metaphors, born of Jane Kenyon's "luminous particular".

Vol. 1, No. 1, Autumn 2002 :: BALANCE
As much a study of imbalance as of balance, consuming passions, existential ruminations, the 'idea' of idenity, the contentious question of integrating the specifically 'human' into the more broadly natural web of balance and influx, the precipice of intimate stresses, major ecological fallout...

Leer a Neruda
Joseph Robertson

no sabes qué decir
y no espera respuesta... [Siga leyendo...]

El desierto entre las flores
José Ignacio Silva Anguita

Cada día viene un día
que no traerá otros nuevos

se nos presentan lugares
como flores, y son los ciclos

aquellos que dicen:
"...tu irás, a ti vendrán".

¿Y el sol? Es el invitado
que lo dirige todo, sin rostro... [Siga leyendo...]

Isla Negra: Derecho a imaginar
Joseph Robertson

Cómo se resume una vida
frente al imposible
océano de fuerza inacabable
y de hermosuras pacíficas

qué mitología la de una vida
convertida en museo
un paso cada día formulando
no un camino sino un foco
de peregrinaje global... [Siga leyendo...]

Nocturne
Salvatore Poeta

When I enter your house,
disturbing the silence of your nocturnal flowers,
and feel myself embraced
with the hopeful intimacy of a breadth about to be exhaled,
I am a star of the universe,
delicately poised on your crown of eternal solitude… [Keep reading]

Fool's Gold » Margaret McGavin de García

The jardín was as beautiful as he remembered, the flowers and lush greenery shocking to his winter eyes. Here was paradise where the harsh barrenness of the biting North was unknown and the perpetual crowd of Sunday lovers took for granted sunshine, laughter and sweet uncovered flesh in January…But the teenage girls in their jumpers from the secundaria looked so much younger, and he recognized no one. No one recognized him either, he realized with a certain bitterness. Was a year so long?

Turning the corner at Aldama, he tried to pretend it was a year ago... [Keep reading...]

Blanco encalada y molina

No te volveré a ver." [Siga leyendo...]

In the Name of the Father
Salvatore Poeta

I confess that at times I have sensed your presence
from behind the iris of eternity,
as you contemplate gleefully, implacably, like a muted Pan
the sacred union between shadow and light,
and not in starched hands that lift
a eucharist into the air... [Keep reading]

Iron & Glass
Chad Johr

The window to the soul?
Nothing more than glass.
Complete with chipped paint frame and dusty sill
It looks like any other
you have breathed on before.

And the gate to the soul?
Wrought iron posts
Fashioned with twists and a dull sharp point
at the top of each. [Keep reading]

Ecology Update » Lester Brown, Earth Policy Institute:
World Food Security Deteriorating
Food Crunch in 2005 Now Likely

The grain shortfall of 105 million tons in 2003 is easily the largest on record, amounting to 5 percent of annual world consumption of 1,930 million tons. The four harvest shortfalls have dropped world carryover stocks of grain to the lowest level in 30 years, amounting to only 59 days of consumption. Wheat and corn prices are at 7-year highs. Rice prices are at 5-year highs... If there is another large shortfall, grain prices will continue the rise of recent months, driving up food prices worldwide. [Full Story]

On Elections & Security » Joseph Robertson, SentidoNews:
Hysterical Blindness
Why it is cowardly to suggest that voters lose their right to choose when terrorists attack...

Since the bombings that struck at the heart of Madrid last Thursday, there has been a lot of talk about whether terrorism could sway an election. Since the PSOE has defeated the ruling PP, conservative observers have wasted no time in calling it a victory for terrorists. This position is laced with malicious intent for the sole reason that it specifically suggests that in the wake of any terrorist incident, the will of the electorate should be conditioned by terrorism. Democracy cannot be secured by predetermining which election result an electorate must take. [Full Story]
