Doctors without Borders (Medecins sans Frontieres/MSF) says the medical situation in Gaza is becoming dire. Some groups have been able to bring medical supplies into Gaza since the airstrikes began, but distribution has become nearly impossible since the ground invasion, and doctors worry that hospitals will be unable to meet the needs of wounded civilians or the normal population of patients.

International media are reporting that Israel’s government has declared “a closed military zone” in Israeli territory near the Gaza Strip, massing troops and moving in armored vehicles. The media have been removed from the area and there has been no official comment on the reasoning for the military ground operation.

Israeli airstrikes on targets in the Gaza Strip have killed at least 228 people, according to reports from the region. The United States has urged Israel to avoid causing civilian deaths, but has not called for an end to the strikes, and Hamas, the militant faction that controls the Gaza Strip, has said Israel has violated the terms of a truce agreement, and that it will act to defend the people of Gaza. The interior minister for the Hamas government of Gaza told the press that he wants foreign governments allied to Israel and throughout the Arab world, to speak out against the airstrikes and pressure Israel to halt them.

For days, news reports heralded the end of the Mumbai siege, though it continued, with fierce gunbattles and intermittent explosions, amid a raging inferno, at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel. There was death and destruction at no less than 9 separate locations in what some headlines termed “the battle for Mumbai”. Diplomatic tensions were high throughout, as foreign governments sought to ensure the safety of their citizens. The dead were of many distinct nationalities, including highly publicized French, American and Israeli victims.

Sen. Barack Obama meets with Israeli political leaders, seeks to reassure key US ally he supports its efforts to achieve peace and security without seeking to diminish its influence or impede key political goals of the state. He did say he believes to achieve peace, both sides need to make key concessions, and that “a US administration has to put its weight behind the process” for peace in Israel and Palestine. Alan Johnston’s ordeal became a global concern, when the BBC and his family organized a campaign to urge his immediate release. The release is a propaganda coup for the Hamas leadership, which after ousting Fatah from Gaza, has been stripped of its role in the Palestinian government. Former PM Ismail Haniyeh appeared with Johnston in a press conference at Haniyeh’s Gaza residence and sought to project a new image of Hamas as keeper of law and order and responsible political leadership.
