While it's true that Obama broke all records raising small contributions from humans, it is also true that Obama and "blue dog" democrats also broke records raising money from large conglomerate multinational corporations.
The only party i know of that addresses the real problem, by refusing corporate donations, is the Green Party.

What i feel you really have pegged is how long it will take to form a Green/Lib coalition, if it ever happens. Americans just are not very used to, or aware of, coalition, and our system is just not at all set up to accommodate it.
Just how such a coalition will work is very hard for me to even imagine, but Greens and Libs are comparatively imaginative people.

I foresee a more multi-polar system emerging as more likely than an extended bi-polar politics. Libs and greens have such very antagonistic views of privatization of governance and social services they would not remain in coalition for very long.

If the Republicans really can't stop their current slide, in the next decade we could see a politics that has Greens and Libs representing bi-polar separation on privatization, with the Dems as the centrist choice which tries to split the difference.

resemblance to???
They have redefined sociopathy with a new low.
The amount of wealth stolen, the opportunities for our future dashed in the face of more extreme peril than our species has ever faced, and the number of people killed quietly by starvation and disease, as a result of the last 20 years of neo-con imperial lust, are in no way ever going to be able to be paralleled by human agents again (unless you count this third Bush term continuing such efforts).
The Republicans are not the only ones due a rude awakening soon, Democrats will also soon learn that humanity will always do whatever it needs to to collectively survive.
