Bipartisan Senate report finds Donald Rumsfeld directly responsible for persistent abuse of prisoners in Bush admin. war on terror. The report, chaired by Senators Levin (D-MI) and McCain (R-AZ), found that top US officials were complicit in planning for persistent use of banned tactics, even seeking to rewrite the law to make them legal, then ordering their use even after Congress refused to “update” existing law.
Bush admin. has reportedly used missile strikes to hit targets within Pakistan at least 30 times since August. The news could be a sign of significant escalation in the Afghan conflict with Taliban militia, and a sign of deteriorating security conditions inside Pakistan. The government of Pakistan may be weakened by the news, as opposition to US operations in tribal areas mounts.
Bank of America says it will cut up to 35,000 jobs over the next two years. The firm had claimed solvency and immunity from the subprime crisis, but then took $25 billion in government rescue funds and now blames its acquisition of Merril Lynch, which lost over $50 billion in the last 4 quarters, for its flagging health.
