Vice President Dick Cheney has, for the second time in one year, been hospitalized in order to correct an irregular heartbeat. Found to be suffering from atrial fibrillation during a routine check-up, the vice president then canceled his schedule for the day and was scheduled for an outpatient procedure to restore a normal heartbeat, at George Washington University Hospital.

Atrial fibrillation is considered to be less dangerous than ventricular fibrillation, which is essentially a heart attack. In VP Cheney’s case, the condition is serious, in that he has a pacemaker that is intended to prevent him from developing an irregular heartbeat or the loss of regular pumping of blood from the heart. There is no information about whether or not there was a problem with his pacemaker or whether the condition could be more serious than last time, but he was filmed getting into a vehicle on his way to the hospital.

The vice president has suffered 4 heart attacks in the past, and concerns about his health have often surfaced throughout his nearly 8 years in the Bush administration. It is expected he will recover safely from the procedure, known as an electrical impulse cardiac treatment.

Also for the second time this year, former first lady Nancy Reagan has been hospitalized after a fall. She is reported to have suffered from a fractured pelvis. She was assisted by staff at her home, and is accompanied by a security detail from the Secret Service, by virtue of her husband’s tenure as president, from 1981 to 1989.

Buoyed by the psychological satisfaction of carrying prophetic certainty within, the cynic then commits more and more fully to the proclamation of unshakeable doctrines about the future, based on bad-faith arguments and a passion for the despairing global outlook.
